What to Expect on the Jack Murat Coffee Farm Tour

What to Expect on the Jack Murat Coffee Farm Tour

The Jack Murat coffee farm tour is a walk through a working Australian coffee farm in Mareeba, Far North Queensland. It's not a display and it's not a performance — it's our farm, as it operates day to day, shared openly with visitors who want to understand coffee properly.

We grow, process, and roast coffee on site. This tour connects those steps in a way that makes sense. Think of it as a practical coffee course — no prior knowledge required.

When tours run

Tours officially start on 1 March 2026, once the wet season wraps up in Far North Queensland and the farm is at its best for visitors. They run through to the end of harvest season.

Tours can be booked here.

What you'll do

In the paddocks

The tour begins in the paddocks where the coffee is grown. You'll walk through the rows and see how coffee grows in Australian conditions. We talk about varieties, seasons, climate, water, and soil, and how those factors influence quality. This is where flavour really begins — long before roasting or brewing.

Growing coffee in Australia is different to growing it elsewhere. This part of the tour explains why.

In the processing area

From the field, we move into our processing area. This is where freshly harvested coffee cherries are turned into green coffee. You'll see how cherries are handled after picking, how fermentation works, and the differences between washed, honey, and natural processing. We explain what these terms actually mean and why small decisions at this stage have a big impact on taste.

During harvest season (June–August), visitors can watch the full processing operation running in real time.

In the roasting room

Next, you'll visit our roasting room. We roast our own coffee on site. You'll see the drum roasters, learn how roast profiles are developed for different lots, and understand why freshness matters — our coffee moves from roaster to cup in days, not months.

Tasting

Every tour finishes with a tasting. You'll cup coffees produced on the farm across different processing methods — washed, natural, honey — and taste the differences for yourself. No jargon, no pretension. Just coffee, brewed where it was grown.

Who it's for

Why we do it

In Australia, we know a great deal about coffee from overseas but not nearly as much about our own. These tours are designed to close that gap — to educate visitors about locally grown coffee and to connect flavour back to place, process, and people.

Australian coffee exists. It's worth understanding.
