WE DON’T GROW COFFEE FOR AWARDS. WE GROW IT HERE IN NORTH QUEENSLAND TO SHARE. STILL, SENDING COFFEES OFF TO BE JUDGED BLIND GIVES US A MEASURE OF WHERE WE STAND - AND IT’S A LOT OF FUN. THIS SEASON OUR BEANS WERE ENTERED IN TWO SHOWS: THE SYDNEY ROYAL FINE FOOD SHOW AND THE GOLDEN BEAN COMPETITION.
AT THE SYDNEY ROYAL, ENTRIES ARE TASTED BLIND ACROSS ESPRESSO, LATTE, AND FILTER. WE ENTERED COFFEES TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM OUR REGULAR PRODUCTION - THE SAME LOTS WE ROAST EACH WEEK, BAG UP FOR CUSTOMERS, AND BREW AT JACK’S NORTH BONDI. NOTHING SET ASIDE FOR JUDGES, JUST OUR USUAL FARM-TO-CUP COFFEES.
THE RESULTS:
- SILVER – ESPRESSO (JACK’S & BATCH 27)
- SILVER – MILK-BASED (LATTE) (ESPRESSO N.1)
- SILVER – POUR-OVER / FILTER (BATCH 28)
THOSE SCORES PUT US TOP IN TWO OF THE THREE CATEGORIES ENTERED. AND THROUGH OUR GOOD FRIENDS AT COFFEE MENTALITY, WHO ROASTED AND ENTERED OUR BEANS, WE ALSO TOOK TOP PLACE IN THE THIRD - THEY WON GOLD IN LATTE WITH OUR COFFEE.
IT SHOWS THAT AUSTRALIAN GROWN COFFEE CAN HOLD ITS PLACE AMONG THE BEST, AND THAT THE SAME BEAN CAN SING IN DIFFERENT HANDS.

WE DIDN’T ENTER THE GOLDEN BEAN DIRECTLY. IN A SHOW OF GOODWILL, OUR FRIENDS AT COFFEE MENTALITY ROASTED AND ENTERED OUR BEANS. THEY BROUGHT HOME BRONZE MEDALS IN FOUR CATEGORIES:

THE MEDALS ARE THEIRS, AS THEY SHOULD BE, BUT WE SEE THIS AS SHARED RECOGNITION. IT’S A GOOD EXAMPLE OF PRODUCER AND ROASTER WORKING TOGETHER, CHAMPIONING LOCAL PRODUCTION, AND SHOWING WHAT AUSTRALIAN SPECIALTY COFFEE CAN DO ON A BIG STAGE.
